If you employ a nanny, you probably already realize the many positive aspects that they bring to your family. They can be an additional positive adult role model in your children’s lives, aware of your child’s developmental milestones working to encourage growth and development. They can give you the freedom to go to work or go about your day secure in the fact that your most precious people are in loving, highly qualified hands. They can make your household run more smoothly with their time and efforts.

Nannies jobs are different from most other professions. They make a difference in children and families lives, yet their work environment doesn’t usually lend itself to getting that recognition or feedback in a more formal way.

Most nannies choose their career field out of a desire to make a difference in the lives of others, and so letting them know that they are indeed making a difference in your family’s life can satisfy this desire and motivate them to continue to do so.

While gestures of appreciation and thank you’s are welcome all year round, InterNational Nanny Recognition Week (September 22-28)  is a great time to more formally acknowledge all of the wonderful benefits that your nanny brings to your family.

Each nanny is different and will have different preferences, and these are good to keep in mind when showing your appreciation. Here are some ideas to choose from:

  • A thank you card, especially if it was made by the children with some words of appreciation from the parents.

  • Treating them to a delivered lunch or special dessert in the home

  • An extra paid day off, or letting them go home early

  • Gift card to a store, restaurant, or spa that you know they like

  • Interviewing your child about your nanny and sharing their cute responses with your nanny. Thrive Nannies has a form for this that you can use here

However you decide to show your nanny appreciation this season, we hope that the positive feeling stays with them and your family throughout this year and years to come.
